How to Help Out Volunteers make our school great – contributing directly to Second Street feeling like a community. Parent volunteers play an essential role in organizing and executing school events, raising funds and facilitating connections. We know that families are busy and finding time to volunteer can be challenging. We have many opportunities to volunteer throughout the year that can fit all schedules, with time commitments varying from just a few hours to ongoing responsibilities. A little bit of time goes a long way to helping create great opportunities for our children, our school and our community. Below is a list of some existing volunteer opportunities that we’d love you to consider being a part of. Date Specific (see the volunteer calendar for this years’ dates https://secondstreet.burnabyschools.ca/calendar/) Social and Community Events – be part of supporting community events like the Welcome BBQ, Breakfast with Santa, Cultural Celebration Night and Fireworks. We need volunteers to help coordinate, to shop in advance and/or to help at the event. Concession – adding fun to our events, the concession is both a memory maker and a great fundraiser. To have concessions run smoothly, we need volunteers to do shopping in advance as well as volunteers to run the concession sales & cooking. Popcorn Sales – one morning a month (~9-10:30), we use volunteers to pop & bag popcorn Pizza Days – every few months from 11- 12, join our volunteers to help sort the pizza order Flexible/Ongoing: Welcome Ambassadors – welcome new families to the school throughout the year. Working closely with the Community Coordinator, ambassadors help families integrate into the school and the community. Class Representatives – acting as a liaison between the teacher and the parents in a particular class. Representatives assist teachers with the coordination of special events and activities. Library Assistants – the library needs detail-oriented volunteers who can assist on a regular basis throughout the year – checking in books, shelving and filing. Gardening Gang – welcoming any green-thumbs or those wanting to learn about gardens to be part of helping our welcome garden and ‘grow & learn’ gardens thrive. Consider being part of seasonal activities: spring planting, summer watering, fall weeding, or winter prep. Refundables Drop-off – be our point person to get refundables collected at the school to an Express Drop-off location so that the refund can go back to supporting the school. Decorations – join a team who create a fun and engaging environment at school by decorating the halls/gym for various occasions, including our annual staff thank you. Community and Parent Advisory Committee / Community Council (CPAC): CPACs function as a collective voice of the parents and community, as well as the administrator of gaming grant funding and fundraising money. They host the forum for the school community to discuss matters affecting the school and the education of our children. Our CPAC is run by a group of volunteers appointed or elected at the Annual General Meeting.
